For the love of God, stop texting!
March 5, 2009
Are you texting the Lord’s name in vain?
The Associated Press reports that Roman Catholic bishops in Italy are “urging the faithful to go on a high tech fast for Lent.” They hope that good Catholics will remove ear buds, shut down computers and, God forbid, stop texting!
Dioceses and Catholic groups in the region have called on a ban for text messaging every Friday in Lent, beginning last week. “It’s a small way to remember the importance of concrete and not virtual relationships,” the Modena diocese said in a statement.
Fascinating modern twist on one of the oldest forms of Christian behavior: abstinence, fasting and prayer.
But is it hypocritical? Is not one’s relationship with God somewhat “virtual” too? Yes, it can be personal, I’m not suggesting otherwise. But you never actually see the Big Man, do you? In this way it is similar to email or text. Especially, you know, when you’re not feeling it.
Our prayers are like “tweets” and we all “follow” Him
